Kirkby Malham Bridge

kirkby malham bridge repairs 2018

Latest Update from the NYCC Highways Bridge Engineer 30th November 2018

With this scheme, we were always looking for the best alternative option to a road closure lasting 16 weeks, the temporary bridge was the best solution as we could get vehicles over the bridge whilst we carried our works below. As it stands buses and large HGV’s cannot pass over the bridge via Airton side, unfortunately there is no other alternative routes around Kirkby Malham to divert these coaches / HGV’s and as a result I had to put the HGV’s over Malham on a one way route as they can get over the bridge via Malham side. This is the best diversion route I can possibly do with the roads around Malham, it is also now being gritted.

I understand coaches that come up from the Airton side have nowhere to go, but I rather have them in Airton than at Kirkby Malham.

In regards to the temporary bridge, there will be no further works being carried out in terms of its current location, ramp positions and as well as keeping the parapets intact.

All I can say is that the scheme is moving and we are expecting to dismantle parts of the bridge in the next week or so.

For people who may not understand the works or who are generally interested in the construction works, it may be beneficial for them to come and visit the bridge, we have nearly installed our heavy duty temp work support system which also represents the type of loads we are having to deal with. (I’ve attached a pic of it taken on Thursday)
